Wines from Temperance Cellars

Started in 2012, Temperance Cellars blends tradition, innovation, and good fortune to bring forth a wine that is equal parts nature’s bounty and labor of love.

Specializing in local California wine sourced from some of the most prestigious and award-winning vineyards in Santa Barbara County, Temperance Cellars wines offer depth, nuance, and subtlety while still remaining approachable to all palates.

HISTORY OF LOMPOC TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT

In the fall of 1874 the Lompoc Valley Land Company founded the town of Lompoc, California. One of the founders, W. W. Broughton, was a teetotaler and had aspirations for making Lompoc a liquor-free town. In the 1870’s, the Temperance Movement was gaining momentum throughout the country and local governments allowed each community to decide their own laws regarding the manufacture and sale of ‘vinous, malt, spirituous or other intoxicating liquors.’ Exceptions were made for medicinal alcohol. And so it was decided that Lompoc would be a Temperance Colony, a place where alcohol was banned. But that didn’t stop everyone from drinking altogether. There were a faction of wets who were forced to consume alcohol in private. And the local Temperance League was always more than happy to relieve them of that liquor. In 1875 an unknown group of ax-wielding women stormed a drugstore known for selling liquor and destroyed all the alcohol on the shelves. In 1881, another establishment known for providing liquor was fire bombed unknown assailants. And the most famous instance of the town’s Temperance Spirit was in 1883 when the local Temperance League used ropes to pull down a building where liquor was being sold. As local rumor has it, the building was then dragged through town as an example to others of what might happen to those who thought to sell liquor.

Spring Flight 2022

2021 Sauvignon Blanc Tierra Alta Vineyard Ballard Canyon This beautiful Stainless Steel Sav Blanc explodes on the nose with lemon grass, grapefruit, honeydew melon, and a firm minerality. The palate delivers a delightful array of bright acidity, caviar lime, kiwi, green apple, and hints pink grapefruit. The finish is a balanced display of mouthfeel, acidity, and minerality. Drink this beauty now or chill for some exquisite food pairings. Enjoy with warm weather. $27/btl

2020 Monica’s Rosé Meadowlark Vineyard Los Olivos District After many requests from wine club members and friends and family over the years, we are excited to bring you a Sangria style wine. This low alcohol, summer sipper should be enjoyed now or hold on to it for the warmer months ahead. The nose is filled with strawberry jam, mesquite, and candied orange. The mouth continues the strawberry theme and adds cranberry with some light acidity. This wine goes down easy and is light on the palate. This easy sipper is made for summer pool parties, Sangria, and any other festive event where good friends gather! $17/btl

2018 Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Clone 115 This still-young Pinot has all the characteristic aromatics and notes associated with Pinot Noir but the 115 Clone in particular has the more dominant earthy tones and the fruity notes are less prevalent as they take a back seat with this highly structured wine. The mid palate is rich in terroir, undergrowth, mushrooms, and a blink-and-you-miss-it hint of strawberry. The finish delivers power, finesse, and a concise amount of complexity. You can drink this now or cellar for another 6-8 years. $45/btl

2017 Pinot Noir Rio Vista Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Clone 777 Vibrant, young fruit dominates the nose with subtle spice and a hint of toast. The palate is brimming with fresh berries, moist earth, and pleasant notes of fine tannins, elegant structure, and the quintessential terroir of the famed Sta. Rita Hills. This young Pinot can be enjoyed now or cellared for 6-7 years. $44/btl

2019 Grenache Spear Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills This highly anticipated release is everything we were hoping for from this amazing vineyard site. With all of the characteristic Sta. Rita Hills flavors but this time coming from a grenache, this wine is truly a special treat. Aromas of ripe red fruits, dried bing cherries, sexy jamminess, leather, and hints of tomato leaf emerge at once from the glass. The mouth is flooded with notes of currants, strawberry, drying tannins, dried raspberry. The powerful yet concise finish showcases the well rounded tannins, strong spice, white pepper, and further notes of sexiness. This wine has that IT factor. Drink now or age for 2-3 years. $40/btl 2018 Moderation 67% Grenache 33% Syrah Los Olivos District AVA Aromas of dried red fruit, sage, and subtle strawberry. The lush mouthfeel is accompanied by black cherry, blueberry compote, cocoa, and plum. The vigorous finish lingers on your tongue with smooth tannins and balanced acidity. This wine begs to be enjoyed with food. $36/btl 2018 Merlot McGinley Vineyard Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA The very floral and fruity nose give hints of rose petal, dried spices, and candied cherry. The front to mid palate is overflowing with more of those floral notes, a slight cola, blackberry, plum and soft tannins. The smooth finish begs for another sip, and then glass. This wine is made to be enjoyed now but will reward those who wait. Have with food! $38/btl
